Climb Companion — processing of personal data
Switch to the iOS privacy policy →
The data controller is Alessandro Sposito — [email protected]. Climb Companion doesn't have a legal department or a Data Protection Officer (DPO): none is required for processing at this scale, but you can still write to this address with any question about this notice.
Climb Companion doesn't have its own server: your profile, projects, photos, training history, Challenges, and everything else you enter stay exclusively on your device, in a local database that the app creates and manages by itself. No data is sent to a developer server — there is no developer server to send it to.
If you take a photo of a route or a boulder, the image is saved only in the app's local database, never in the system photo library or anywhere else. If you pick an existing photo instead, the app uses Android's system picker (Photo Picker): it receives only the photo you choose, without ever requesting or getting access to the rest of your photo library. Even the system camera, if you use it to shoot, is opened through an Android intent that doesn't require the app to hold any specific permission.
Videos you record with the app or attach to attempts stay saved exclusively on this device, in an app-private area other apps can't access. They're never uploaded to any server, never analyzed, and aren't included in the manual export: if you switch devices or uninstall the app, your videos are lost. The individual frames you choose to pin to holds are instead saved together with your projects and are included in backups, since they're part of the beta. A video only leaves the device if you explicitly share it, and from there it goes wherever you send it (Instagram, TikTok, Messages...), under that service's rules, not ours. When you record a video from the app, the system also records audio: Climb Companion deletes it right after recording and never keeps or transmits it.
Challenge reminders and, if you start a free trial of Climb Companion Plus, the single alert shortly before it expires, are local notifications, scheduled and managed entirely by your device: they never go through any server, neither the developer's nor a third party's (unlike push notifications, which would require a server). In both cases the app asks for permission only when it's actually needed, not at launch.
Purchases and subscriptions are handled entirely by Google through Google Play Billing: payment, card details, and billing never pass through the developer, who only receives confirmation from Google that a purchase is valid, never your payment data. For information on the data Google collects during a purchase, see Google Play's privacy policy.
Climb Companion doesn't integrate any analytics, advertising, or tracking tools, whether the developer's own or third-party (no Facebook SDK, Google Analytics, advertising framework, or similar). We don't learn how you use the app, how often you open it, or what you do inside it — that data stays only on your device and we never see it.
From Settings ▸ Data and backup you can export all your data to a file you choose where to save, through Android's system picker (Google Drive, device storage, another app...): it's entirely under your control, not an automatic upload. The same file can be re-imported to restore your data on another device or after reinstalling the app. The developer never has access to this file unless you choose to share it yourself.
Your data stays on the device until you uninstall the app or delete it yourself from the individual screens (e.g. deleting a project or an attempt). Uninstalling the app permanently erases everything, unless you've saved a manual backup beforehand — that's why a periodic export is recommended before switching devices.
Unlike iPhone (iCloud), Android doesn't have a ready-made equivalent for automatic cloud backup without introducing Google sign-in and verification that aren't part of this app yet: for now, the manual export described above is the only way to keep your data safe. If automatic backup arrives in the future, this notice will be updated accordingly.
Climb Companion isn't specifically directed at children under 16 and doesn't require creating an account, so it doesn't knowingly collect identifying data from minors. If you're a parent and believe your child used the app entering personal data, you can delete it at any time by removing the app or the individual entries from its screens.
Since your data stays on your device, you already have full, direct control: you can view, change, or delete it at any time from the app's screens, with no need to request it from the developer. If you'd still like to formally exercise the rights granted under the GDPR (access, rectification, erasure, portability, objection) by writing to the controller, you can do so at the address above.
If this notice changes substantially, the updated version will always be available here, with the date of the last change.
For any question about this notice or about how your data is handled, write to [email protected].
